What is The Victorian Club Permit Scheme / Historic Vehicle Registration
Club Rego Vic | The Victorian Club Permit Scheme Explained
In Victoria, if you own a car or bike that is 25 years or older and are a member of an approved vehicle club, the Club Permit Scheme, AKA Club Registration, offers an alternative to full registration with reduced costs but limits the number of days you can use the vehicle.
Reduced Registration Costs
As a cost comparison, full registration is around $950 per year whereas Club Registration is $88.55 for 45 days of use or $171.55 for 90 days of use per year (after a $43 once off fee for number plates).
Stamp Duty Savings
When purchasing a vehicle, stamp duty IS NOT payable for club registration but IS payable on full registration. For this reason, if the car or bike is on full registration with the old owner, it's advisable to purchase the car unregistered at a discounted price so stamp duty is avoided. Pretty big savings, for example - On a $25,000 car/bike, motor vehicle duty is $1050.
Reduced Insurance Costs
An additional benefit to the Club Permit Scheme is reduced insurance costs through insurers like Shannons using their Extreme Limited Use policy. Personally, we have cars with full comprehensive insurance for as little as $350 per year for an approximate agreed value of $20,000.
So with these benefits, our weekend car went from costing $2,000 per year in registration and insurance to around $500; and we did not pay any motor vehicle duty, saving nearly $1000. We have three cars on club permits and simply wouldn't be able to afford the fees to keep them registered without the Club Permit Scheme.
What’s the catch?
There are a few obligations you have with Club Registration, the main one is maintaining a logbook when you use the vehicle. It’s a simple little book that you need to date and sign when using the car or bike. This is how VicRoads ensures you don't exceed 45 or 90 days a year of use.
If you get pulled over and you haven’t filled out the logbook correctly, you will face heavy penalties as you are technically driving an unregistered vehicle.
